2016 Royal Canin Dog Show

This past weekend, my husband, Mom and I attended our first dog show. As in the kind you see on tv (think Westminster, but not quite on that scale of grandiose).  The variety of breeds, from tiny to giant and pocket dogs all the way up to over 200 pound mark (mastiff), it was truly a feast for my eyes. As you can imagine, I did not stop smiling for one single second. Can you guess how long we were there? Six and a half hours!! Just call me the crazy dog lady from now on, okay? Lol.

We saw: dachshunds, corgis, Manchester terriers, shar pei’s, labs, Afghan hounds, Great Danes (oh my god wait til you see the big guy!), Pyrenees, BICHONS (OMG their big white bouffant heads and their tree trunk fluff legs?! I die!!), poodles, chow Chow’s, Dobermans, Leonbergers, a Dandie Dinmont, cavalier King Charles spaniels, samoyeds, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Collies, old English sheep dogs, German short haired pointers, Viszla’s, Wolfhounds…. and on and on and on.  Can you now see why I was so happy and in love with all of the dogs?!  It was a cornucopia of canines and I was just eating it up.

The best part of it all was that there was over 30 beautifully groomed Bichons that I fawned over all day long.  I fell in love with this one little princess named Aubry. She was less than 2 years old and from Michigan and such a pretty girl.  You’ll see many photos of her below, that and a bunch of other Bichons that belong to my mom’s breeder.  What was cool was that we were able to pet most of these dogs, many saying of course, because ‘they were dogs first and show dogs second’.

Dogs that I loved: All the Frenchies, the Bichons of course, the Samoyed, the Berners, Afghans, Dobermans, Standard Poodles and the Old English Sheep Dog.  Boy they were adorable and super silly.  And I almost missed the Danes but caught them before we left.

All were beautiful dogs in their own right.  What about you?  Any favorites?

Here are 1,765 photos that I took for you to enjoy with me:

Ahhh they are all so gorgeous! I just want to hug each and everyone of them! It’s so weird that growing up, I would always watch dog shows and then these past few years, I haven’t bothered to watch any. Maybe it is because I’ve seen so many or maybe it is because I’ve gotten to experience the dog show world for a short period of time, who knows? My step dad was like the top #1 Bullmastiff breeder in MD when he used to run his kennel with his ex. That’s where my mom and I both got our Bullmastiffs from and he started showing our dogs for us. So weird how things work out lol. I’m not against dogs being shown if they like it because some dogs truly LOVE being in the ring and showing off but I just don’t like the people (no surprise). The judges are all biased and go off of what breed is their favorite or allow themselves to be paid off by people to have a particular dog win- it is a lot of behind the scenes drama lol. Like one year when we tried showing our Frenchie. The handler of the Frenchie that was to be lined up right behind our dog purposely walked her dog right up next to/ past our dog right before going in the ring to get her dog to nip ours (not all dogs in the show world are 100% dog-friendly, most are but not all). Needless to say, that freaked our little French Bulldog out and he did poorly in the ring.

There were not 1,765 pictures here, and I feel cheated. πŸ˜‰
They are all so gorgeous! What is the breed 2 photos down from the picture of Aubry that you have captioned? I’m in love with that face!!

  • Lol! I lied, na na na boo boo! πŸ˜›

Are you speaking of the pic with the brownish color dog, with the man’s bottom half of his body? They are Leonbergers. You’ve seen me post about them before when I’ve gone alpaca sheering (last year). The lady that we help out with sheering, she also breeds Leo’s and so she’s always got 5 at her house always, that are just lumps for fur on the floor. You may remember this guy (see photo). His name was Kramer and he passed away from cancer last year. Biggest, sweetest 170 lbs you’d ever met. Everyone fell in love with that boy.

  • They were ALL just so lovely and adorable. Aubry was cheeky – she kept wanting kisses but you could only offer up your face for her to kiss or rub under her chin, at least until she was done in the ring. And the sheep dogs, oh my goodness were they ever cute and silly. Samoyeds are beautiful dogs but definitely a working dog – they hated waiting around to be shown so they were quite chatty. Small world, a family friend is getting a Samoyed puppy from one of the ladies we befriended there. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

It’s so obvious that I adore animals, isn’t it? πŸ˜‰

  • That’s so crazy you showed dogs. That’s awesome. I can imagine it can get quite competitive and political amongst competitors but also the judges. I heard on the some of the judges and it’s like, aren’t they supposed to be impartial? I know people will always have their favorites but sometimes the dogs they pick for first place, it leaves you wondering what the hell their rationale was for choosing that dog and this dog or that dog didn’t win. It’s a lot of work you put in with great successes but not without its hardships.
You should’ve seen ALL the frenchies!! They were adorable to watch prancing around the ring and then the judges manhandling them. Lol

That sucks that bitch ruined your chances. I saw much respect on the weekend for the dogs that had issues and keeping in tact dogs away from the bitches. They were all very organized that way, they tried to stagger dogs according to behaviour and separating the ones that just incites the others (like two of the Samoyed that just wanted to play).

Such a fun day though! πŸ™‚ Hopefully one day again you’ll watch them again. I really really want to go to Westminster Dog Show one day!!

Frenchies are so cute and can be so funny, just like English Bulldogs. My step dad wants another Frenchie sooo bad and so do I and so does my step sister. I keep telling him all he has to do is go buy a litter of French Bulldog puppies and then we can each have one lol. He jokes around maybe if he wins the lottery. I’m sure they will be getting a Frenchie within the next 3 years though. The earliest we would get another dog is probably in like 3ish years but now Jesse keeps saying that after the next one passes away, he wants to only have 2 dogs max. at a time. I’m sure I can get Rory to change his mind on that one though lol. And I don’t see my step sister getting another dog anytime soon either.
